🤖 Artificial Intelligence and the Future of Work

[1] The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) has sparked intense debate about its impact on the job market. While some predict widespread unemployment as machines replace human workers, others argue that AI will create more jobs than it eliminates—just as previous technological revolutions did.

[2] History offers some comfort. When the Industrial Revolution introduced machines to factories in the 18th century, many feared mass joblessness. Instead, while certain tasks were automated, new industries emerged, creating roles that had never existed before. The same pattern repeated with the rise of computers in the late 20th century: jobs like "social media manager" and "app developer" were unimaginable in 1980.

[3] However, the AI revolution may be different in one crucial aspect: speed. Unlike previous technological shifts that unfolded over decades, AI is advancing at an unprecedented pace. A 2023 report by Goldman Sachs estimated that AI could automate the equivalent of 300 million full-time jobs globally. Yet the same report noted that AI could also boost global GDP by 7% and create new categories of employment.

[4] The jobs most at risk are those involving routine, predictable tasks—data entry, basic customer service, and certain types of clerical work. In contrast, roles requiring creativity, emotional intelligence, and complex problem-solving appear relatively safe. A study by the World Economic Forum predicts that by 2025, 85 million jobs may be displaced by AI, but 97 million new roles may emerge that are more adapted to the new division of labor between humans and machines.

[5] The key to surviving this transition, experts say, is adaptability. Workers who continuously update their skills—particularly in areas where humans still outperform machines, such as critical thinking and interpersonal communication—will be best positioned. As one researcher put it, "AI won't replace you. A person using AI will."

Q1. What is the main idea of the passage?
AI will transform the job market by eliminating some jobs while creating new ones, and adaptability is key to survival.
🔍 解題思維:主旨題 → 看首段(debate about AI's impact)+ 末段(adaptability is key)。
Q2. According to paragraph 2, what lesson does history teach us about technological change?
While technology automates some tasks, it also creates new industries and jobs that never existed before.
第二句 "certain tasks were automated, new industries emerged" = 自動化舊工作但創造新產業。
❌ 常見錯誤:過度推論說「不用擔心」→ 文章第三段馬上說 "However, the AI revolution may be different"。
Q3. What makes the AI revolution different from previous technological shifts?
Its unprecedented speed (AI is advancing much faster than previous technologies).
第一句 "different in one crucial aspect: speed" → 答案就在這裡。
Q4. According to the World Economic Forum, what is the predicted net effect on jobs by 2025?
A net gain—85 million jobs displaced but 97 million new roles created (net +12 million).
Q5. What does the researcher mean by "AI won't replace you. A person using AI will."?
People who learn to use AI tools will have an advantage over those who don't.

文章寫 "85 million jobs displaced but 97 million new roles" → 很多人只看到前半就選「85M失業」。
"Infer" = 你必須根據文章線索推論,不是直接找原文複述。選項中跟原文一模一樣的反而是錯的。

Step 1(0:00-0:30):Skim
